For those who “stay put at their desks” all day…This one is for you!

Not budging from the position seated often during the day for coffee breaks, lunch breaks or even few restroom breaks? Then let me warn all workaholic office bods that they are soon inviting uncalled health issues much earlier in their lifetime.

Sitting at your desk and staring at computer screens all day, cannot make you more productive than an average worker. This is a common misconception seeded in deep thought by hard working professionals that  putting in extra hours at work by being seated in a position, will help them create impression on their boss and maybe get the desired promotion much sooner in their career path.

However, contrary to this preconceived notion – the fact underlies that rapidly changing economic climate calls for need of a smart worker over the hard worker. While hard work earns huge dividends in the longer run, but do you think being seated in a position all day at desk, improves performance?

Just introspect and gauge on where you stand in comparison with your colleagues at work (who can be average or smart workers). You will soon find answers on what I intend to voice out through this revelation. You are seriously affecting your health by not promoting physical body movement with some walks during coffee, or resting your eye by not looking at computers for long hours.

People who are glued to desks tend to put on weight around their mid-section and end up with bad postures such as hunching forward. The simple solution to maintaining body regularity and reducing stress levels is to: sit less.

The American Heart Association recommends 10,000 steps a day walk, which equates to 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. It is advisable for working professionals to take break after every 30 minutes to make time for a stroll and roll their shoulders and neck.

However, contrary to popularly held beliefs that one daily exercise session can reverse the effects of sitting all day, this is false.

30 minutes of intense workout session at the end of the day equates to almost nothing to save you of the health dangers associated with lack of physical activity. Lack of bodily movements thereof contributes to lifestyle associated diseases such as diabetes and cardiac problems at much younger age.

Try to stay active, agile and on the move – even if it means you have a desk job and your boss is observing your time off desks. Moving away from your desk for a brief after every 30 minutes of prolonged sitting will not hamper productivity and performance. On the contrary, when you go drawn in later, post coffee breaks, your focus and concentration levels are at an all-time high to enhance productivity.

Employers should encourage employees to move more, since healthier employees reduce healthcare costs and are more productive. Attention to wellness at workplaces is one of the best ways to attract bright talent.

Also office spaces should be designed to contribute to workplace wellness, wherein activity-based floor plans allow workers to move around more, and migrate from their personal work station to a cafeteria for coffee with colleagues, or an area where team managers can have standing meetings.

Moving from one zone of an office to the other, helps employees to open up their mental blocks on job and focus better, when they get back to their desks for work.

Activity-based working allows creation of healthy workplaces and this can be used as an effective recruitment tool by hiring managers to attract and recruit best talent, especially the millennials who would like to be part of work environment – where fitness is blended carefully with the organisational culture to reflect wellness in the attitudes of people towards work and life overall.
